Out of Retirement
Catalogue No ANVIL001 Release Date: 5th November 2010.
All the music on this CD means something to me.
I’ll try and explain:
You can listen to the highlighted tunes right now.
Apache is where it all began. Back about 1961 and I was eleven, I heard this piece of guitar music on the radio - played by The Shadows. I was completely hooked. I got my first guitar and studiously found all the notes for Apache and within a week of struggling, I could play a passable rendition.
Let The River Run Carly Simon has produced some wonderfully anthemic songs. This one is my tribute to her.
In The Ghetto Such a meaningful song.
Cracklin’ Rosie Another from my distant past. Just such a feel-good song.
Nivram features my old mate Iain on Bass GuItar. It is on the Shadows first album, and, in those early days, was a huge challenge. Not typical early Shadows, but the memories are still there, and I get a huge buzz both listening to and playing it.
If I Had Words This is an old song which is really quite simple. I treated with layers and, by the last verse I lost count of how many guitars are actually playing!
Peace Pipe Classic Shadows, though being a B-side was never well known. I’ve added my own backing theme, which seems to fit well.
He Ain’t Heavy … He’s My Brother Such a beautiful melody. The words will mean a lot to many people
Stay With Me Till Dawn Judie Tzuke seems to be an acquired taste. However, when I first heard this track I was completely swept away.
Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves. Cher has had some great songs over the years. I may yet tackle some others. I had a lot of fun, creating a ‘yee-hah’ cowboy feel. I just seemed appropriate.
Midnight Another early Shadows number, probably a ‘B’ side to one of their early Hits.
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face What can one say? Just a beautiful song. I hope I’ve done it justice.
I Love You Because A classic Jim Reeves song. Just had to include it.
1492 : Conquest of Paradise The Vangelis theme to the film of the same name. This one is for my mum - she loved the tune.
A New Day Has Come The words of this are so poignant, I think most people can relate in some way or another. Unfortunately, I cannot sing, so had to put the feeling into the playing. I think I succeeded.
Black Velvet “Mississippi in the middle of a dry spell.” No need to say any more. Just big guitar sounds.
Wind of Change A classic anthem which really captures the mood following the fall of the Berlin Wall and re-unification of Germany.
And Now The Small Print::
